After being ravish at the age of 13 by her grand yield's tenant, Jack, Dolores goes under and begins to sustain undone. She internalizes guilt that doesn't belong to her and blames herself for the death of Jack and his wife's son. She also feels vicious over the death of her mother, who dies in a car cam stroke shortly after her release from the psychological hospital. Dolores' understanding of her mother that she arrives at during her stay at the mental hospital is a pivotal point in the novel. What she learns in therapy about her mother is also what she learns about herself. Forgiving her mother is the beginning of the long process of learning to forgive herself: "In the wake of my self-disclosure about Ma and Jack. . .Dr. Shaw and I turned over and studied who my mother really had been: a fragile woman, a victim in many ship canal--of her mother, her husband. The overcoming of her trials and tribulations and the birth of her new beginnings are symbolized by the water sprayed on her by the whale that she wholly witnesses: "Then the water darkens back to normal and, though it's quiet, something is happening--something hole-and-corner(a) only I can feel. . .I've seen her, swimming and flying both. I'm slicked in her spray. Christened" (Lamb 465).
