Cesare Lombroso was a well- cognize Italian criminologist who lived from 1835 to 1909 and is still known as the father of criminology as he based his study of the criminal as a physical entity and not purely crime. Lombroso’s supposition was based on more of a scientific study as oppose to philosophical or judicial.
Lombroso’s most well known concept was his article of belief of atavism. He believed that the criminals had physical abnormalities such as jaw structure and ear shape, to which he concluded that criminals were “biological throwbacks to a primitive of atavistic stage of evolution”. His theory was developed as a result of the thousands of postmortem examinations he conducted, and was based on the theory that a criminal is natural a criminal, although he later conceded that not all criminals were the harvest-feast of biological defects.
Lombroso was the recognized leader of the positivist school of criminology, receivable to his contribution to the measurement of crime. Lombroso called upon the theories of evolution that were introduced during his time, and used these theories to support his belief that criminals were not only physically different from non-criminals, but that they were as well physically inferior, because they had not evolved as far as non criminals.
